A few days ago I wrote a WordPress plugin called Primary Term. It allows you to set a primary tag or primary category (or any taxonomy) for a post. The main benefit of the plugin is being able to control which category is used by WordPress as primary when constructing a post’s permalink. I use %category% in my permalink structure and if a post is in more than one category you don’t have a choice which one is used for the permalink.
Also, if you set a primary category the NavXT Breadcrumb plugin will use it in its breadcrumbs. How great is that! :-)
This website is powered by WordPress, using the IndexOf theme.

This is funny — a few month later I created this plugin https://github.com/kasparsd/category-in-permalink which only does the URL part. And we ended up solving almost the same problem using different approaches.
